Hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, Black Mountain runs the gamut of psychedelic music. From moody alternative rock, to spacey stoner rock, they have proven to be diverse and exploratory on their four past albums. They recently announced their fifth album, “Destroyer,” which will be released on May 24, via
Jagjaguwar Records. The album can be pre-ordered on their website. Along with the announcement, the band also released the heavy single, “Future Shade,” accompanied by a psychedelic video.
“Future Shade” is definitely a riffy step up from some of their earlier, more laid back work. It opens with driving, huge sounding drums with dual guitars, giving off very favorable Uncle Acid vibes. Subtle but distinct synths are placed further back in the mix. Stephen McBean’s lead vocals along with Amber Webber’s haunting background vocals perfectly complement each other with their usual distinct sound, as they create rich melodies and harmonies. As the song develops, the synths come more to the forefront. Impressive sounding interchanges between keyboard and guitar leads takes us back to the chorus, and a tasty, extended Bonham-esque drum fill points the way to the final go around.
The video is every bit, and maybe even more-so, as psychedelic as the music. Trippy and colorful, the visualizers manically flash on the screen, accompanied by snippets of the lyrics. For best results, watch the video full-screen with the music cranked, and enjoy.
